2016 “Women to Know” feature highlights African American agents of change

NEW YORKMay 24, 2016 — HelloBeautiful.com, the premier online destination for African American women, today announces the release of their “Women to Know” feature, highlighting African American women from all walks of life who are using their platforms to effect change in their communities.

This year, the annual feature highlights Black women who are at the forefront of social change.  The list includes a range of women– politicians, lawyers, activists, teachers, entrepreneurs and artists – who are working tirelessly to advance the message of equality and to uplift their communities. Some of the dynamic women included are: Alicia Garza, founding member of Black Lives Matter, April Reign, creator of #OscarsSoWhite, Kamala Harris, the first female Attorney General of CaliforniaMarilyn Mosby, State’s Attorney for Baltimore City,  Sybrina Fulton, Activist and Mother of Trayvon MartinBree Newsome, Activist and Filmmaker and Valeisha Butterfield Jones, Head of Black Community Engagement, Google.

While Black women continue to be at the forefront of social change, too often their efforts go unnoticed.  HelloBeautiful is seeking to change this by bringing the work of these incredible women to its readers. “Each year we are more impressed with the women we get to know through this list, and it is our pleasure to celebrate them as the heroines they are.” Says Allison McGevna, Managing Editor, HelloBeautiful.com.  “Each profile will leave you feeling as if you just received an empowering message from your sister, their experiences are all of ours,” McGevna continued. Content includes editorial and video, as well as an interactive feature encouraging women to become Women to Know by celebrating their own stories using the hashtag HBWomenToKnow and a photo upload.

HelloBeautiful, an InteractiveOne property, embraces the philosophy that Black women are diverse and dynamic — the women who work tirelessly for women’s rights and the women who are rocking the latest trends are not mutually exclusive.  From politics to social movements, from fashion trends to the latest entertainment stories, HelloBeautiful covers all the headlines black women need to know.  2016’s Women to Know feature speaks to this credo.
