Miami, FL, October 24, 2014 – “Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend,” Oprah Winfrey’s eight-city arena tour and transformational weekend, announced the sixth Toyota “Standing O-Vation” award recipient on Saturday, October 25 in Miami, Florida. The Toyota “Standing O-Vation” recognizes extraordinary people who are making positive changes in their communities and inspiring others to do the same. Oprah Winfrey and Team Toyota brand ambassador Amy Purdy, “Dancing with the Stars” finalist and Paralympic Bronze Medalist, honored Estella Pyfrom of Estella’s Brilliant Bus, a Miami-based program created to bridge what Estella refers to as the “digital divide,” the lack of computers and technology in schools of underserved neighborhoods. As a recipient of the “Standing O-Vation” award, Estella’s Brilliant Bus will receive a $25,000 grant from Toyota in support of its outstanding commitment to making computers and technology accessible to underserved children.
Estella’s Brilliant Bus was founded by Estella to expose underserved children in communities and provide access to computers and technology. Using money from her and her husband’s own savings, she created a bus with built-in computer stations so that it may travel to sites in different communities. The curriculum is designed to enhance learning skills in reading, math, science and social studies. So far, Estella’s program has reached more than 61,000 children, and she hopes to increase the number of buses to expand her program nationally.
“What happened on stage today helped me to realize I am living the dream,” said Estella. “Thank you to Oprah and Amy Purdy for the indescribable experience today and for recognizing my dedication to children. The $25,000 grant from Toyota will allow me to expand my program and continue to further education.”
The driving force behind The Toyota “Standing O-Vation” stems from the automaker’s commitment to fostering women’s interests. While reflecting the kind of stories that define the brand, The Toyota “Standing O-Vation” is an opportunity to celebrate remarkable women who are not only making the world a better place, but also motivating others to spark their own journey of personal change.
Amy Purdy, a Team Toyota athlete and brand ambassador, represents the power of inner strength as she continues to overcome obstacles and live as a role model for those who have faced challenges in their lives. After losing her legs at age 19 as a result of meningitis, Purdy has led an adulthood of extraordinary accomplishments.
