Mason, State Representative Hazelle P. Rogers and The White Dress Project Founder Tanika Gray Valburn.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, 80% Black, 70% White, 60% Hispanic and Asian women will be diagnosed with fibroids by age 50. Very little is known about fibroids and how to prevent or medically treat them. The White Dress Project was founded to serve as a voice for millions of women who suffer in silence. A white dress is a piece of clothing women with fibroids fear to wear. It symbolizes empowerment in the organization with proud declaration “we can wear white” in unity to combat the epidemic and promote social awareness.

“The demographics of Florida means that the state can speak to all of the women affected,” said Rogers, who had her uterus removed after her second surgery. “I’m so excited to be apart of this movement to bring awareness to the issues women with uterine fibroids face, no more suffering in silence.”

“The work we are doing with The White Dress Project for ‘Fibroids Awareness’ is building a community of women who no longer have to suffer in silence with this epidemic,” said Valburn. “Together we must create a call to action for fibroids advocacy and legislation, partnering with policy makers to proactively improve options for women challenged by reproductive issues.”

The White Dress Project has secured state resolutions recognizing July as Fibroids Awareness Month in Florida, Georgia, New York and the City of New Orleans. With more support, this issue can receive more awareness and hopefully a cure.

Help get federal legislation and funding for fibroids awareness, research and advocacy.
