Catalyst Miami to Host Anti-Poverty Summit
The Time is Now: Building a South Florida Movement to Cut Poverty and Build Opportunity
Miami Innovation Center
1951 NW 7th Avenue, 6th Floor,
Miami, FL
Our economy is growing again, but too many low-income families in South Florida aren’t seeing any benefit. Instead, stagnant low-wages, unaffordable housing and childcare, and a lack of health insurance coverage are only a few of the challenges facing them as they try to make ends meet in an economy that simply isn’t working for everyone. But, the conversation about income inequality, poverty, and opportunity has started to shift and now is the time to build a strong anti-poverty movement in South Florida—one that can effectively advocate for the policies we know will build a more inclusive economy such as a higher minimum wage, closing the coverage gap, and access to paid sick leave, among others. This all-day summit will bring together service providers, social justice advocates, policymakers, media, and local and national policy experts to learn from recent successes, build new partnerships, discuss policy priorities, and develop a joint strategy to make poverty reduction a real and accountable priority in upcoming elections. We will also identify new opportunities to build the movement in South Florida into a larger national anti-poverty movement gaining momentum in other communities across the country.
